Alive, Awake, Alert, Enthusiastic, components critical to the warrior mindset.
Alive. “You only live twice: Once when you are born, and once when you look death in the face.” (Fleming) Most people in this world never truly live. They go through life passively, accepting the world around them as fish accept their bowl. To be alive is to be aware of our existence and the world around us; to see it for the masterpiece it is, perfections and imperfections.
Awake. Just as people disregard their existence, they go through life as though they are dreaming. Decisions may be made and actions may be performed passively, without thought. To be awake is to embrace life, think about where we are and where we’re going, realizing that we are in control of our destinies, and actively make decisions along the way.
Alert. As people go about their lives in a dream state, they are oblivious to the world around them. Not only do they disregard the beauty of the world around them, but they also disregard the dangers. They are easy victims to a predator with his mind set on his own desires. To be alert is to be aware of the world and the people in it. We don’t think “that will never happen to me,” but “what do I do if it does happen?”
Enthusiastic. Preparing ourselves for the dangers and misfortunes of the world does not mean we should live in fear. To be enthusiastic is to realize that we are in control of our lives. We should do everything in our power to positively control our lives. In the event that we face dangers and misfortunes, we face them and control them, turning events to our favor as quickly as possible. Life is not fair. We cannot control the events around us, but we can control our reactions to them. We can rise above them or fall into despair.
The four components go hand-in-hand and are required if we’re going to live fulfilling lives. If we cling to these components we will be ready to face danger and misfortune. You alone will decide how you react to the situations you find yourself in. You will decide if you will be alive, awake, alert, and enthusiastic.
